It is back! Cooking to Combat Cancer III

Istigare una lotta!/Put up a fight!

April has snuck up on us…again! Where does the time go? Before I lose more time, I better get going on Year 3 of Cooking to Combat Cancer. I can’t believe the event is on its third go around! So cool.

As I mentioned during the first year's event, not knowing many people who have not been touched by cancer, my grandmother’s battle with pancreatic cancer was my first introduction to this ghastly disease. A life changing experience for our family, it wasn’t really a battle since gram passed only a few months after her diagnosis. It’s a time in my life I will never forget, and it still causes raucous feeling in my stomach. Then, my diagnosis on April 29, 2001 rocked my world in a way that profoundly changed my view on many things. I knew I needed to quit smoking, but did the sign need to be so drastic? So, that is why I launched Cooking to Combat Cancer in March ’07.

In fine foodie fashion, cooks from across the globe make my heart full with all dishes they contributed to the event. The round up turned out better than I could have hoped. Year 2 was just amazing. So, let's do it again! As you're cooking over the next couple of weeks, try to work in recipes which include ingredients that help the body fight cancer. In short? Think healthy. Mayo Clinic Recipes is a great place to look, as well as the places online Kalyn suggested last year - including this list of Cancer Fighting Foods and Spices and this list of 11 Cancer Fighting Foods. The online Thyroid Cookbook is also a great resource, as there were several occasions I had to follow a low-iodine diet during my five years of radiation and scans. Find other great recipe stops? Leave the info in the comments for others to check out.

As for your posts? Please post your cancer combating culinary creation (that is for this event only), with a link back to this posting, no later than Wednesday, April 29, 2008. If you’d like, feel free to include the graphic (shown above) in your post, as well.

After you post, please send an email to me - melecotteblogevents (at) gmail (dot) com - with the following information:
  • your name
  • your location
  • the name of your blog
  • the name of your recipe
  • a permalink to your post
  • a picture (if you'd like)

No blog? No prob! Email me the recipe (if you want), a blurb about the dish, etc. and I will include the info in the round up.

Happy Cooking!

100% ready and thinking of great ideas. I'll try to get several up throughout the month and link. That okay? Here's to a month of brightly colored veggies and tons of antioxidants!

I lost my father to pancreatic cancer in 2006. I also lost my uncle to it in 1987. I will definitely be posting for this! Thanks for the challenge :)

Sounds like a plan. I'll let you know when I post my recipe!

And congrats on being cancer-free. A recipe blitz like this is a great way to celebrate and a great way to spread awareness.

Hi all. So happy to hear of your continued good health. It's such an inspiration.

Just discovered your site via Susan @ Food Blogga.

I just lost my mother-in-law to cancer. I'm passionate about staying healthy--cooking delicious food--and truly believe that eating healthy, while it may not cure--it can only help.

As a medical librarian & a healthy recipe junkie, I try to incorporate the research with the recipes.

I'm a huge fan of the NYT's Recipes for Health! Check it out.

Love to pack in the nutrients with a morning Green Smoothie.

I write a lot about food & it's effect on health, & I'm continually uplifted by research such as:

"The knowledge that some cancers can spontaneously regress is an incredible motivator to continue to modify my lifestyle. For example, Servan-Schreiber details the top foods that inhibit breast cancer cell growth: garlic, leeks, scallions, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, & kale."

I apologize for this long comment, but this is one of my favorite subjects.

It will be hard to decide which recipe to pick!
